Warner Bros. eventually decided to release the film, even though the editing had not been completed, in order to promote the film. It also wanted to use the film to make a statement on the changing world of bachelor parties. Warner Bros. took a gamble, and it turned out to be one of the studio's biggest hits, grossing over $346 million worldwide.[12]
After a successful shoot, the movie was already set for release, but Warner Bros. asked the lead actors to participate in a screening of the film for the studio executives, with their permission, as they had a tendency to cancel films after such presentations. This was done to prove the movie's potential to Warner Bros., and they gave Joel Edgerton, who was already in Thailand at the time and was not involved in the production, a DVD with the unfinished version of the film so that he could edit the scenes and create a more credible story arc. The edit was presented at a Warner Bros. screening and although the studio did not make any major changes, Edgerton's version has occasionally been released on DVD, including a version edited by Edgerton himself (released in Australia as part of a DVD boxset). The uncut versions of the film have also appeared in DVD compilations.
The studio then secured an option to make a sequel, which would see a group of four friends from the original film return to Las Vegas for a wedding of one of them. Phillips and his production team started writing the story (which was still based on the unedited version) and the new screenplay was written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. Phillips was worried about the film, as he wanted to maintain the freshness of the first film and avoid repeating the same story.
Lucas and Moore sold the original script of The Hangover to Warner Bros. for over $2 million. The story was about three friends who lose the groom at his Las Vegas bachelor party and then must retrace their steps to figure out what happened.[11]It was then rewritten by Jeremy Garelick and director Todd Phillips, who added additional elements such as Mike Tyson and his tiger, the baby, and the police cruiser. However, Lucas and Moore retained writing credit in accordance with the Writers Guild of America, West's screenwriting credit system.[11][13] 827ec27edc
